SummaryAn integrated introduction to spoken and written Japanese for those with little or no previous knowledge of the language. The course will include kana writing (the Japanese phonetic writing), and an introduction to some kanji (Japanese Characters), approximately 150 to 250. A good deal of private study is necessary to meet the requirements of the course.

The course provides essential grounding for the second year Japanese language course Japanese Language 2 (which is a replacement course of Japanese 2A, ASST08006 ) and subsequent study to Japanese Honours Degree level.

This course is not available to native or near-native speakers of Japanese. If in doubt, contact the Course Organiser.

All students will be given a formative feedback exercise that will be helpful for the assessment for this course and students' general academic development.

A placement test and questionnaire on students' background in Japanese language studies will be conducted in the first class.

S1:
W1 Hiragana, Katakana, L.1
W2: L.1 (self introduction, numbers)
W3: L.1-2 (prices and shopping)
W4: L.2-3 (introduction to verbs)
W5: L.3-4 (verbs, location words), Class Test 1
W6: L.4 (past tense)
W7: L.4-5 (introduction to adjectives)
W8: L.5-6 (adjectives past tense, counters)
W9: L.6 (verb te-form, requests)
W10: L.7 (adjectives te-form, describing scenes)
W11: L.7-8 (short / plain form, stating opinions), Class Test 2

S2:
W1: L.8 (making plans)
W2: L.8-9 (stating opinions on past events, ordering at a restaurant)
W3: L.9-10 (giving reasons, comparisons)
W4: L.10-11 (transportation, travelling)
W5: L.11 (talking about experience), Class Test 3
ILW: no normal classes
W6: L.11-12 (giving explanations and advice)
W7: L.12-13 (seeing a doctor, weather, potential form)
W8: L.13-14 (stating reasons, verbs for giving and receiving)

Learning Outcomes
To provide a structured introduction to Japanese grammar.
To enable students to read and write hiragana, katakana and about 150-250 kanji characters, and to use Japanese for simple spoken and written communication, to Japanese Language Proficiency Test N5 or Common European Framework of Reference for Languages level A1/A2.

On completion of this course, the student:

Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has.
Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
