SummaryDescription: The course focuses on post-1979 Chinese politics and in particular the way in which political institutions and political participation have been transformed by economic and political liberalisation. Recent developments are placed in the context of the 1949 revolution and the political system created by the CCP in the 1950s. The course thus covers the 20th century historical background to contemporary Chinese politics, the institutions of the current political system, and the socio-political changes produced by economic reform since 1979.
