SummaryThis course is intended for students on the M Sc in Japanese programme who hold an undergraduate degree in Japanese or have previous experience of studying Japanese to advanced level and who wish to focus on developing their Japanese language skills, particularly in reading and writing, for research purposes.
The course will be delivered through fortnightly seminars. In the first part of the semester, academic teaching staff will lead seminars explaining how they approach the main issues in dealing with texts and other Japanese data in their areas of research. In the second part of the semester, seminars will be student led, and will normally focus on Japanese sources being used for initial dissertation research

Additional Information (Assessment) The course is assessed by an individual presentation and 2000 word report on the use of Japanese sources for your intended dissertation topic (70%), a collection of summary reports on seminar content totalling 2000 words (20%), and seminar participation and general contribution (10%).

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the course students should be able to:
Examine texts and other data in the Japanese language that relate to the specialist research areas covered on the course
Assess their content and identify key sections that are relevant to specified research purposes
Take and explain decisions on how to address important issues in approaching material in Japanese (reading, translating, summarizing, contextualizing, etc.)
