Summary | This course is the partner to Prophets and their Oracles (level 8), and is aimed at students beginning their academic study of biblical literature. It is an introduction to the first five books of the Old Testament or Hebrew Bible, and aimed at students beginning study of the content of the Torah or Pentateuch by a survey of important themes. |

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course students will have:
- studied the first five books of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament;
- explored different interpretative approaches to biblical texts (e.g. historical criticism, literary criticism, feminist criticism, early Jewish approaches, etc.);
- become acquainted with the standard biblical tools (e.g. dictionaries, Bible encyclopedias, commentaries, etc);
- demonstrated an ability to identify key terms and their meanings;
- demonstrated good judgement about how to judge the relative importance of items on course bibliographies;
And, for the set biblical texts, students will be able to:
- identify key interpretative issues;
- describe and account for varying interpretations;
- offer some independent analysis.
