| Summary | This course is the partner to Jesus and the Gospels (level 8) and like that course is aimed at students beginning their academic study of biblical literature. It comprises a focused introduction to the life and letters of the apostle Paul, including critical issues pertinent to the whole Pauline corpus, as well as detailed reading of several representative letters (Galatians, 1 Corinthians, and Romans).

Assessment comprises the following: a short report on a historical background issue (500 words, due beginning of week 3, = 5%;
a topical mini-essay on one of several topics set by the instructor (1000 words, due beginning of week 6, = 10%;
an exegesis essay on a passage from Galatians, 1 Corinthians, or Romans (1500 words, due beginning of week 10, = 15%;
regular attendance and participation in weekly tutorials = 10%;
a written degree exam = 60%.
In order to pass the course, students must achieve a minimum of 40% in both the coursework (combined mark) and the degree exam. |

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course students will have:
- understanding of the contents of and the history surrounding the Pauline letters;
- understanding of the main critical issues in Pauline studies;
- experience writing a set topical essay in biblical studies;
- experience writing an exegesis essay in biblical studies;
- skill in reading and critical interaction with primary and secondary sources.
Students will also be able to:
- identify and explain key issues in the study of Paul and his letters;
- relate the Pauline texts to their Jewish, Christian, and Greco-Roman contexts;
- undertake basic exegesis of Pauline texts;
- render critical judgments on historical and interpretive issues in the Pauline letters;
-demonstrate an ability to identify key terms and their meanings;
demonstrate good judgement about how to judge the relative importance of items on course bibliographies.
