Summary | A basic familiarity with computing and IT is important for most careers and, increasingly, for many aspects of everyday life. This is reflected in business management and accounting, where computing resources are widely used as a source of information and a tool for word-processing, data analysis, and communication. This course gives background knowledge which will prove essential as students undertake further courses and proceed into the workplace. |

Your work will be assessed in two ways:
i. By attending the tutorial session(s) for all components. There are three tutorials in each of Semester 1 and Semester 2.
ii. By completing the four assessments (Presentation Software, Word Processing, Spreadsheets, and Databases ) during the tutorial session(s) for the relevant component.
Failure to satisfactorily pass the course will prevent progression into Honours.

Learning Outcomes
TUTORIAL OBJECTIVES/LEARNING OUTCOMES
Presentation Software (Weeks 2-4, Semester 1)
Upon completing the assessment, the student will have demonstrated their ability to:
1. Create a simple presentation using a variety of slide types.
2. Print slides and speaker and audience notes.
The skills taught are those required for the 2nd year course in Marketing and the 3rd year course in Strategic Management, as well as being generally useful for other courses taught by the School, including the 1st year Poster Exercise.
Word Processing (Weeks 5-10, Semester 1)
Upon completing the assessment, the student will have demonstrated their ability to:
1. Create and edit a document.
2. Save a document both as a Word file and as PDF.
3. Change font styles.
4. Change the alignment and format of paragraphs.
5. Format page margins.
6. Use styles and headings.
7. Use the spellchecker.
8. Create and modify tables.
9. Insert footnotes.
10. Insert symbols and special characters.
11. Use the Illustration tool to create and edit a simple diagram
12. Count the number of words in a document.
13. Print a document.
14. Submit an essay electronically.
The formatting instructions and techniques taught are consistent with those stated in the University Degree Regulations and Programmes of Study as required for the production of essays and other assessed work.
Spreadsheets (Weeks 1-5, Semester 2)
Upon completing the assessment, the student will have demonstrated their ability to:
1. Open and create a workbook.
2. Save a workbook under a different file name.
3. Input data into cells.
4. Format individual cells, groups of cells, rows and columns.
5. Alter row heights and column widths.
6. Create formulae.
7. Copy data and formulae, including use of Fill handle.
8. Use both relative and absolute cell referencing.
9. Use functions.
10. Change data formats.
11. Insert and delete rows and columns.
12. Print a worksheet including page setup options and printing control.
13. Create a graph of results and print it out.
14. Export both data and a graph to a Word document.
The skills taught are those required for mathematical and statistical analysis in the 2nd and 3rd year courses in Business Research Methods and financial modelling and analysis as part of Accounting 1, as well as being generally useful for other courses taught by the School.
Databases (Weeks 7-9, Semester 2)
Upon completing the assessment, the student will have demonstrated their ability to:
1. Create forms using the Form Wizard and use forms to enter data.
2. Create reports using the Report Wizard and use reports to print out data.
3. Create and use queries to filter, sort and present data.
The skills taught are those required for the 2nd year course in Management Science and Information Systems and the 3rd year course in Advanced Financial Accounting (Sage).
