Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course you should be able to do the following. Describe and explain the fundamental principles of main group chemistry, chemical thermodynamics, organic carbonyl chemistry, ionic solution chemistry, and organic stereochemistry and reaction mechanisms. Describe and explain the trends and patterns of structures, physical properties and reactivities of selected main group compounds and carbonyl compounds. Use your knowledge to explain observations and solve problems associated with the material covered in the course. Use laboratory equipment safely in order to prepare chemical compounds, observe chemical changes, and measure physical quantities, and to interpret and analyse the results. Write clear, succinct laboratory reports that take due account of errors and uncertainties.
You will be in the position to provide a foundation for your study of Chemistry in later years. To develop your analytical skills in solving problems both individually and in groups. To encourage you to use a range of techniques for learning, e.g., lectures, textbooks, computer-aided interactive learning. To develop your practical skills, required for safe and effective working in a modern chemistry laboratory. To instil an enthusiasm for Chemistry in you.
