| Summary | This course introduces students to a number of different theories of literature and approaches to literary study, which have emerged in the 20th century. Students will thereby explore a variety of approaches to reading texts and different kinds of narratives in the light of the discussed theories. The sessions focus on the Theory of the Novel, Russian Formalism, Structuralism and Poststructuralism, Psychoanalytic Criticism, and Feminist Criticism. Authors whose theoretical writings will be studied include Viktor Shklovsky, Mikhail Bakhtin, Roland Barthes, Sigmund Freud, Simone de Beauvoir, and Luce Irigaray. Each seminar will concentrate on the discussion of one or two reasonably short texts by the theorist in question. |
