| Summary | Students will be supervised in producing practical literary translation and creative writing exercises. The 10 hours of literary workshops will be held in 5 sessions (of 2 hours each) in each semester on alternate Thursdays. These workshops are run by a range of practising literary translators both from within the university and from outside. Each literary workshop will focus on a particular genre of literary text and will run in English, as all students on the programme will be taking these workshops together. Students are expected to write creatively and translate at these workshops and are often given a topic in advance to prepare. These pieces of writing and translating will not be formally assessed but will get feedback from the translator running the workshop and comments from other students in class.
The classes with the Portfolio tutors will take the native tongue of the students into consideration while deciding on the direction of translation; however, the translation direction generally remains at the discretion of the tutor. The most common practice is to receive training in both directions, but this depends on staff availability. Texts are selected for translation by mutual agreement between the student and the portfolio tutor; however, there will be prior focus on certain genres. |
