SummaryThis course will be an option course on the MSc in Children and Young People's Mental Health and Psychological Practice. The course will introduce students to concepts of trauma and resilience in a developmental context. Past and current conceptualisation will be considered within applied settings to question how these conceptualisations help assessment and intervention for children and young people. The course has a preventative health care/health promotion focus.

Aims

To critically examine existing definitions and models of trauma in children and young people
To critically appraise models of trauma in terms of developmental impact and consequences, and relevance to and utility in applied settings
To critically examine existing definitions of resilience and coping in children and young people
To consider how interventions might be shaped to enhance resilience and coping to prevent secondary risk accruing from future trauma

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Identify and appraise the key elements of alternative theories of trauma and resilience in relation to children and adolescents' developmental trajectory
  2. Articulate their understanding of trauma and resilience, using their own professional experience as a frame of reference, as it relates to established theories of trauma and resilience
  3. Critically examine the theoretical bases for trauma and resilience services and their translation into practice with children and adolescents
  4. Construct an approach to practice that integrates developmentally-informed theories of trauma and resilience within the professional and organisational context
