Summary | This course takes a managerial approach to project management. Many of the tools and techniques used to run projects in the modern context have been around for some time and there is a large body of professional knowledge that captures project management practice ¿ for example through the AMP, PMI and PRINCE2 methodology. However there are many instances of project failure ¿ many of which are reported in the national press.
This course aims to make students aware of what the commonly available tools which are used to run projects are, so the course introduces project lifecycle, stakeholder management, planning and control, estimating, risk management and closing projects down as subjects. However the course takes a reflective look at these approaches and asks students to consider whether what makes some projects successful and others not. If these tools have been around for such a long time ¿ why are projects so risky and prone to cost overruns, expanded timescales and a failure to deliver against the stated objectives? If we can understand this we can learn from project failure and build better and more robust practice. |
