| Summary | This course provides an advanced examination of the practice of relationship work and counselling couples, as conceptualised in the dialogue between psychodynamic perspectives and the person-centred approach. The course further examines the therapeutic relationship and process when working with couples in relation to specific topics already identified by previous students and counselling practitioners. Topics include: working with couples experiencing a high degree of conflict; assessment and work with domestic abuse and child protection in couples and relationship work; working with couples where a history of sexual abuse is present; an introduction to sex therapy; challenges posed by the internet in relationship counselling; the sex industry and pornography in couples work; agency considerations in working with couples and relationships. A distinctive feature of the course is the inclusion of practice sessions, in which participants have the opportunity to practice the application of their learning in listening triads.
Students are required to draw on their own family and relationship experiences within class sessions. The rationale for and implications of this personal work will be fully explored in the first session.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course students should be able to:
respond to specifically challenging situations in couples and relationship work
further develop cultural and sociological understandings of contemporary families, intimate partnerships and relationships
analyse couples in relationship with reference to issues of difference, diversity and power
analyse the main theoretical concepts of couples and relationship counselling within the psychodynamic perspective and the person-centred approach
evaluate how these theoretical ideas inform the practice of counselling in this field
conceptualise and analyse key themes in the practice of counselling couples with reference to the students own practice and personal history.
