SummaryThis course will explore the molecular basis for tissue regeneration. When does regeneration rely on specialised stem cells, and when is it achieved through 'reprogramming" of differentiated functional cells? What do these mechanisms of reprogramming tell us about how the differentiated state is normally stabilised? Is there a trade-off between the stability of organ structure that is required for complex functions and the flexibility that allows for regeneration?
Are there common strategies for regeneration used by both plants and animals, having been discovered independently during the evolution of multicellular organisms? Why is it that mammals can regenerate some organs, for example the liver, very effectively whilst others, such as the spinal cord, do not regenerate at all? And why is it that other animals, such as fish or newts, can regenerate their spinal cord while we cannot?
