SummaryThe aim of this course is to understand some of the main economic problems faced by developing countries. This aim will be achieved by examining some of the development economics literature and by studying some of the empirical features of selected developing countries. The course will also provide an opportunity to examine both the applicability and some of the limitations of economic reasoning within the context of developing countries. The course as a whole, and the work required for the postgraduate students, also develops skills relevant for policy-makers in developing countries.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Understanding of the meaning of "development", theories of development; industrial districts, urbanisation, and rural-urban migration; trade theory and developing countries; trade policy in developing countries; "making poverty history"; and new technologies and development.
