SummaryThis is a bridging course for HSS International Foundation Programme students and Office of Lifelong Learning Credit for Entry students only; it is not available to undergraduate students. It provides an opportunity for students to reflect on their development as learners on the International Foundation Programme or on Credit for Entry and to prepare for the learning, teaching and assessment environment that they will encounter on undergraduate degrees.

Its assessments are designed to prepare students for two forms of assessment that they are likely to encounter as undergraduates: formal examinations and oral presentations on an academic topic.

The course will cover:
Reviewing study skills for university
Referencing and library skills
Managing study
Examination skills
Oral presentation skills.
Course description Teaching will be a mix of mini-lectures, practical class exercises and class discussions. The course will cover:

Reviewing learning strategies and preparing for the challenge of undergraduate study
Oral presentation skills
Examination skills
Referencing and library skills
Managing studies
Class presentations

Additional Information (Assessment) The course will be assessed through two instruments of assessment:

A two hour examination. Students will will answer two questions from an International Foundation Programme or Open Studies course they have taken: 50% of mark.
An oral presentation (five to ten minutes) followed by a brief period for questions and discussion. Students will also produce a summary abstract of 500 words to accompany their presentation: 50% of mark, weighted 3 (oral presentation): 1 (summary abstract).

By the end of the course, students will have:

Reflected on the learning strategies they have developed and planned ahead for the greater pace and intensity of undergraduate study (non-assessed);
Developed examination skills and sat an examination under University examination conditions;
Developed skills in presenting ideas orally, and delivered a presentation and produced a summary abstract on an academic topic.
