SummaryBlock placement 1 is a student teacher's first opportunity for praxis during the placement in a local school, students will have the opportunity to observe practitioners to teach and to consider the relationship between theory and practice. Block placement 1 will contribute to the student teachers development as an effective, reflective, transformative practitioner which is an over arching aim of the programme. The four themes of the programme: learning teaching and assessment, research, equity diversity and values, and curriculum will be considered within the placement arrangements through the student teachers observation, analysis and practice and through discussion with colleagues placement school and university tutor.
Course description Student teachers must take part in the following activities:

1. They must observe practicing teachers and analyse teaching and learning.
2. They must demonstrate the ability to act on constructive feedback on their own practice.
3. They must begin to understand diversity in learners and how they can respond to this as a practitioner.
4. They must demonstrate secure and powerful subject knowledge.
5. They must interact professionally with a range of staff and parents and other adults with responsibility for the children.
6. They must demonstrate the ability to plan, to prepare and deliver teaching.

Additional Information (Assessment) Assessment on block placement 1 consists of the following:

1. Formative assessment by visiting tutor. The visiting tutor observes a single lesson and gives verbal and written feedback on an observation report with next steps advice.
2. Placement is assessed summatively in a joint report written in partnership between the university tutor and the supervising teacher.

Learning Outcomes
Whilst on placement, students learn though observation and practice which includes how to:

1. Reflectively observe and analyse the ways in which experienced teachers teach;
2. Reflect and act on constructive feedback fro mentors and other staff;
3. Analyse classroom processes and interactions;
4. Identify individual pupils' learning needs and ways of meeting these;
5. Apply subject specialist knowledge and subject specialist pedagogies within a classroom context;
6. Participate in the wider school context, and reflect analytically on that context;\
7. Interact professionally with a broad range of personnel involved in the care of children and young people.
