SummaryThis is the first course of a certificate which aims to develop leadership knowledge and understanding and leadership and organisational skills, and to enable participants to reflect critically on the understanding and skills they acquire. Course participants will be able both to develop and demonstrate their understanding of the principles of educational leadership through developing awareness of their leadership potential and exploration of the nature of teacher leadership.

Prohibited Combinations Other requirements A first degree;
Full GTCS registration;
A minimum of three years teaching experience;
Access to a suitable working environment which will enable the applicant to carry out practical leadership activities;
An application supported by the applicant's headteacher or an appropriate senior manager.

Learning Outcomes
Development of knowledge and understanding of:
- the nature of leadership in schools and the role of values
- teacher leadership
- the contested nature of professionalism and the role of the teacher
- professional learning and their development as a leader
- self evaluation for development
Development of skill in:
- gathering evidence including feedback to make an informed self evaluation
- identifying their leadership skills within their current role
- evaluating and critically reflect on their leadership practice
- identifying and justifying their professional development needs in relation to leadership
- reflecting critically upon a range of theoretical perspectives on leadership
- making more informed and effective decisions in their practice in leadership
- presenting the outcomes of a self evaluation

Special Arrangements Delivery can be on/off campus at summer school or on weekends and evenings dependent on cohort. It involves developing web based supportive networks and participants will be invited to join the course at set times to ensure this is manageable
