Summary | This module provides an introduction to and close study of feature writing, newspaper columns to be precise, by contemporary Spanish novelists published in the Spanish press in the post-1975 period. It consists of formal (linguistic and stylistic) and thematic analyses of newspaper columns, an exploration of generic questions (the interrelationship of the column with other genres), as well as ensuing representations of contemporary Spain, and also a practice of this particular aspect of feature writing in Spanish. |

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge of the Spanish newspaper column by writers, its history, its development, especially in the democratic context, as well as its features and functions within the newspaper context. An understanding of the newspaper column as a genre straddling literature and journalism and its affinities with other genres. An understanding of the structure, form, and language of columns, including a range of stylistic features, such as register, voice and tone, as well as more specific stylistic and narrative (rhetorical) devices. Ability to analyze representations of contemporary Spain resulting from columns, also expanding familiarity with aspects of contemporary Spanish society. An awareness of the importance of form and structure. Development of skills required to produce this type of feature writing in Spanish. Improvement of style and range of expression in Spanish.
The following are the main transferable skills that will be developed: critical, analytical, and interpretative thinking, close reading of texts, research skills, effective and reasoned communication of ideas, presentation skills, and creative writing skills.
