SummaryThe course will examine Portuguese culture, society and political history, through texts taken from a variety of genres - novels, short stories, poetry, and drama.

The selection extends from the years of maritime expansion to the wake of the Salazar regime. Special attention will be paid to Camoes's Renaissance epic, Os Lusiadas, and its lasting influence on Portuguese literature and thought, especially on parodic reworkings of Sebastianism.

The course will deal with concepts of tragedy and irony, narrative voice and structure, and it will address shared preoccupations between the selected authors, poets and playwrights, as well as between their respective periods. Some of the themes to be discussed will include: empire and dictatorship; national identity; myth and folklore; religion; family and gender roles.
