| Summary | This course aims to give the student knowledge at a level appropriate to the course (whether undergraduate or postgraduate) of a representative sample of women¿s writing from Latin America, based mainly around the novel but also incorporating a variety of other material such as cultural essays, poetry and short stories. In limiting the course material by gender, the focus will be on giving the student insight into, and understanding of, key cultural and theoretical issues regarding the woman writer in particular, such as ghettoization and l¿écriture feminine through styles ranging from lyrical and erotic to black humour and biting social criticism. The course also aims to develop the student¿s skills in reading, analysing and interpreting literary texts written in Spanish, as well as encouraging the student to go on and explore for her/himself the enormous wealth and diversity of Latin American literature. |

Learning Outcomes
Students should:
a) gain the necessary skills to discuss issues relating specifically to women¿s writing in a sophisticated and informed manner.
b) be able to contrast different ways in which Latin American women writers have addressed questions of gender and writing.
c) be able to offer from their readings of the prescribed texts observations about the cultural baggage of terms such as ¿feminismo¿, ¿femenino¿, ¿escritora¿, ¿poetisa¿ etc. in the diverse Latin American context.
d) be able to present all of the above in written and oral form, with reference to a broad range of secondary sources.
These aims and objectives complement those of existing courses by covering a range of writers not hitherto offered as part of other Latin American options.
