SummaryA course for beginners with no previous knowledge of Italian, designed to give absolute beginners a basic, working knowledge of spoken and written Italian. The course is not suitable for students with previous knowledge of Italian.

All students take all elements of assessment, including the examination.

There is an identical course (Foundation Italian Language 1 - ELCI07008), which runs in the second semester.

On successful completion of the course students will have the option of taking Foundation Italian Language 2 ELCI07005 or ELCI07006 (20 credits), which follows on from Foundation Italian Language 1.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course learners who performed successfully will be able to communicate at an elementary level (A1) in the target language in situations of daily routine. The acquisition of a basic language competence and a vocabulary of 600/700 words should be expected to allow the oral and written production of simple phrases, and to understand short passages where the context is clear and identified.

Students joining the course after the first class meeting with timetable restrictions on which group they can join must contact the course secretary before enrolling to confirm availability in the required group.

The first class meeting will be the second class of the first week (week beginning 15th September)in the normal teaching room at the normal teaching time for each group.
