SummaryThe course provides an approach to post-Soviet Russian culture through a consideration of different media, including literature, cinema, television and newspapers. It encourages an interdisciplinary approach to post-Soviet Russian culture and, through textual analysis, the development of reading skills in Russian. The emphasis on individual project work enables students to pursue aspects of the subject that are of particular interest to them, while gaining the perspective offered by the wider cultural context.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the unit, a candidate will be able to demonstrate:
! sophisticated knowledge and understanding of broad trends in the development of Russian culture since the end of the Soviet period;
! first-hand acquaintance with a number of key cultural products in a variety of media ;
! capacity for sophisticated analysis of specific cultural products in a variety of media and for presentation of that analysis in coherent written form;
! awareness of the basic concepts and principles associated with the study of Russian culture;
! ability to read and process written Russian at an appropriate linguistic level;
! capacity for independent study and efficient management of time;
! ability to locate relevant primary and secondary material, and to present and interpret this material coherently and in such a way as to demonstrate achievement of all the outcomes listed above.
