SummaryThis course is designed to increase participants' ability to plan, undertake and report small-scale academic research in written and spoken form. The main course components are: Critical reading and text analysis; Discussion skills; Presentation skills; and work on two Projects (one collaborative and the other individual).

Additional Costs There is one set book for the course: "Study Speaking" by Anderson, Maclean and Lynch ISBN 9780521 533966. It costs around £15.00 and it is not necessary to buy the accompanying audio CD.
Information for Visiting Students
Pre-requisitesAcademic English for International Students (AEIS) 1 & 2
AEIS is a 20-credit academic course taught by ELTC staff and designed to improve students' academic English. AEIS has very strict English language requirements, so all students who are interested in AEIS must take the Test of English at Matriculation (TEAM). All enrolments for AEIS are organised by the Visiting Student Office (VSO) in the College of Humanities & Social Science. It is essential that you visit the VSO (3rd Floor, David Hume Tower) if you are interested in taking this course.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will have completed two cycles of research, involving
- selection and scoping of a feasible research topic
- location and critical reading of relevant sources
- selection of material for citation
- first draft of the written text
- response to feedback on the draft
- revision, editing and proofreading
- bibliographic presentation
- presentation of the final text
- communication of the findings in oral form
