SummaryThe writers studied in this option provide a sense of variety to be found in women's writing in Scotland in the twentieth century and give an idea of the growth and development of writing by women in Scotland from the twenties to the nineties. The earlier writers are considered in relation to Modernism and the Scottish Renaissance. Novels by Muriel Spark and Elspeth Barker, published between 1960 and 1991, will be considered in relation to the Scottish tradition of the "double" in literature, particularly Hogg's Confessions of a Justified Sinner, and with Jessie Kesson in relation to the ballad tradition. Recent Scottish women writers such as Janice Galloway and A. L. Kennedy have matured in a different cultural climate to the earlier twentieth century writers and to those such as Spark and Barker who live and work outwith Scotland. Issues coming out of the earlier works and consideration of new issues will be part of the assessment of Galloway's, Kennedy's and Kay's recent work. The class also discusses gender and nation, class and race, in relation to these works.
