SummaryThis course introduces students to a number of key American novels of the first half of the twentieth century, raising issues of narrative form and national self-definition. Close attention is paid to historical context and a number of critical approaches through which these works can be read.

Learning Outcomes
The course will develop the students' knowledge of the literature of the period in question, with specific regard to a number of major genres and intellectual issues, while also enhancing their ability to read critically and comparatively and to engage with an area of specialist research not otherwise available to students in Edinburgh. It supports the Learning Outcomes outlined in the Programme Specifications for MA Hons in English Literature. It also confirms to the benchmark criteria laid down for English.
