SummaryThe aims of the course in terms of knowledge, understanding and subject content are:

- to examine curren theoretical debates among geographers, historians of science and in cognate disciplines on the geographical nature of knowledge-making and the situated nature of geographical knowledge, considered in historical context;

- to examine substantive themes in the historical geography of geographical knowledge;

- to understand the spatial constitution, reception and movement of geographical ideas.

Learning Outcomes
In terms of learning outcomes, students will, upon successful completion of the course, be able to:
- understand the situated and constitutive nature of knowledge's making, with especial reference to geographical knowledge;
- appraise theoretical arguments relating to the spatial nature of science and other forms of knowledge;
- articulate through reasoned examples in historical context the geographical bases to geographical understanding of the world;
- document in written form a detailed examination of geographical knowledge as a form of intellectual, social and political authority.
