SummaryThis course will review the rising burden of obesity and diabetes, and the epidemiologic transition, assess the risk factors and impact of urbanization.
The course will aim to make explicit the public health concerns raised by the diabetes epidemic, the public health and medical models of prevention, and the implementation of interventions at the international, national and local levels.

Intended learning outcomes:
On completion of this course the candidate should be able to understand
* The multiple and interrelated pathophysiologic mechanisms that contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes.
* Understand the natural history of type 2 diabetes.
* The prevalence of diabetes in various populations around the world and the global projections for the diabetes epidemic.
* Risk factors associated with development of type 2 diabetes.
* Diabetes and Blindness
* The unmet needs in management of the disease.
* Current and new advances in treatment strategies for patients with diabetes who are at increased risk for cardiovascular disease
