SummaryThis course is an introduction to the history of the Islamic world from 500 to 1650 CE. The first semester covers the pre-Islamic background to Islam, the life of the Prophet Muhammad, the Arab conquests, the formation of the first Muslim world empire (the Caliphate) and its fragmentation into a commonwealth of successor states (500-1050). The second semester surveys the Islamic world from 1050-1600, including the Seljuk Turks, the Crusades, the Mongol invasions, the formation of the Ottoman and Safavid empires and the expansion of Islam into Africa and and Central and South Asia.
