SummaryThis course is an introduction to the political, economic, social and cultural history of the Middle East from 1800 to the present. The first semester covers the precolonial Ottoman empire, colonial rule and the rise of nationalism until the Second World War and examines the process of domestic transformation and international challenges. The second semester covers the period of postwar independence and subsequent domestic and regional conflicts, ranging from nationalism, statism and socialism to Islamism and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
