SummaryThe aim of this course is to examine the relationship between language and society and between language and power. Using examples from the Middle East, the course analyses language as an instrument of control, persuasion, and coercive power, as well as a form of social and political action. The course also explores how states represent themselves through discourses that serve to transform existing realities, for example through naming and unnaming people, streets, and monuments.
