SummaryIn this course we will study modern Iranian culture and history through the works of some of the key authors of modern Persian literature in English translation. The course does not require prior knowledge of Iran or Persian literature. The course will cover the period from the early twentieth century down to the present. It will provide students with an opportunity to develop an understanding of modern Iran through short stories, novels, poems and graphic novels. Through these various forms of literary works, we will examine some of the key historical events as well as social challenges that Iran has experienced, including modernity, westernisation, revolution, war and the role of women. This course is jointly taught with undergraduate students.

Learning Outcomes
The main objectives of this course will be the assessment of the works of several Iranian writers of the twentieth century (three men and one woman), their careers and the style and substance of their literary contributions in light of trends and events in contemporary Iranian society. In the process we will evaluate other approaches to this material utilised to date. The course aims also to develop further students¿ abilities to do secondary-source research and to present oral and written work clearly and effectively while also honing their analytical skills analytical skills and improving their interactive capacities.
