SummaryThe EU has evolved as a complex system of governance. In this course we first examine alternative dimension to the governance of the EU, and the competing interpretations of the EU as a governance regime. We do this principally through the lens of the EU as an economic regulator, and consider the legislative (governance) role of the EU in this guise. In the second semester we develop this analysis by exploring the content of EU policies, both in terms of internal economic policy interventions and externally by analysing its profile and policies within the global economic context.

Learning Outcomes
This LLM course is intended to augment the courses currently available for LLM students in general, although the target group is those taking the LLM EU Law. It is intended to complement existing courses by examining the governance of the EU by analysing its economic policies rather than as a discreet international legal order. The course will equip students with the critical skills required to understand EU governance and policy, thereby going beyond the learning outcomes conventionally expected to result from the study of EU law. Accordingly, it will assist place EU law in the context of the economic challenges confronting the EU, and the governance structure within which the EU develops capacity to meet and respond to such challenges.
