Summary | The course will examine the various ways in which European Union law now shapes both the structure of media markets and the content of media services in the EU Member States. Students will be encouraged to consider: i) the impact of growing convergence between the audiovisual, telecommunications and computing sectors on traditional regulatory structures, and ii) the impact of European Union rules on established national regulatory systems and goals.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will:
- have gained an understanding of EU competence in the media field and the institutional framework within which media policy is developed at the EU level;
- have developed specialist research skills in the media field, with knowledge of how to find, evaluate and synthesise not only legislation and academic commentary, but also documents produced by industry, civil society and regulatory bodies;
- have an appreciation of law in its context;
- have developed skills of reading and critical analysis;
- have developed written and oral skills, including the clear and succint expression of ideas
