| Summary | This course is designed as an introduction to European Union law for postgraduate students who have not studied law and/or EU law at undergraduate level. The approach taken will emphasise the sources of EU law, and the key concepts and principles underpinning the continuing evolution of EU law in general. Institutional, constitutional and substantive elements of EU law will be outlined, with a particular focus on the application of legal principles to actual and hypothetical situations in practice. Specific methodological questions will also underpin each of the substantive topics addressed |

Learning Outcomes
Through the use of primary sources, secondary literature and case studies, the course aims to:
1. Emphasise a legal understanding of EU integration, but one sited in relevant economic, political and social considerations and debates;
2.Explore the ways in which EU law has developed and, in particular, explore the role played by different EU and national actors in that process;
3. Demonstrate the relevance and effects of EU law in a range of practical situations and contexts.
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
1.Appreciate the distinctive legal structure of the European Union;
2.Understand both the scope and limitations of EU legal competence;
3.Analyse and evaluate the substantive development of EU law, from the perspective of both the EU and national legal orders.
