SummaryThis is a for-credit course offered by the Office of Lifelong Learning (OLL); only students registered with OLL should be enrolled.

This course follows the evolution of British and American poetries of the last fifty years in tandem, aiming to find key areas of communication and difference in a transatlantic literary dialogue. We will talk about the most significant poets, trace their understanding of the craft, discuss their experiments and read their most beautiful poems.

By the end of this course, students should be able to:
¿ understand the textual strategies and working assumptions at the root of poets¿ work;
¿ assess the interactions between poetry and issues of voice, race, gender, history and art;
¿ display an awareness of the poetic traditions and diversity in America and the UK.
