SummaryThe course addresses the theme of the Medical Biology Hons BSc Programme, namely the scientific basis of human medicine. In Semester 1,through lectures from experts in the field and student led presentations, we will explore: diseases and disorders important nationally and internationally, including their identification and the role of biological science in advancing understanding and laying the foundation for their raional management and treatment; implementation of drug design and discovery; integration of new technologies, including genomics and stem cell techniques; international health; resources; ethical and socio-economic factors.

The course also aims to provide familiarity with statistical techniques commonly-used in the biomedical literature, and with the principles of designing and conducting clinical trials.

Development of communication skills will be through student-led sessions discussing and critically evaluating recent papers.

Semester 2 teaching will focus on development of skills in the critical analysis and communications, largely in support of the Critical Analysis and Synoptic courses running concurrently.
