SummaryThe course provides a basic introduction to the documentary forms and the writing styles and conventions most commonly found in medieval Scotland. Starting with twelfth-century Latin charters the course moves on to look at various other forms of legal and governmental record such as notarial instruments, exchequer rolls, and burgh court books, many of which are in vernacular Scots.

Learning Outcomes
The aim is to give the students
1. Familiarity with the different document/source types they are liable to encounter and use during the course of their research
2. A basic ability to read and understand the text of both Latin and Scots documents.
3. An understanding of the evolution of writing styles and materials
4. An awareness of the potential uses and limitations of the documents studies as historical sources
