| Summary | Asia Minor was a major centre of classical urbanism. After the foundation of Constantinople in 330 many of the patterns of urban life were transformed and new civic institutions and structures emerged; Christianity flourished and the old pagan ways were suppressed. We will study both archaeological and textual sources for urban life including law codes and inscriptions. There will be particular attention to the evidence surviving from southern Turkey where we will consider not only the remains of cities and villages but also the evidence of saint=s lives and other texts. Flourishing urban life ended around AD 600 and we will consider the various factors from plague to invasions and ecological disaster which have suggested to have brought about its demise. |
