SummaryAn introduction to the study of Greek, Etruscan and Roman women. This course uses a wide range of evidence, but especially that of art and archaeology, to explore the daily experiences of women in these Classical societies, as well as the roles they play in society, social attitudes towards them, and their social status. The women studied in this course include empresses, freeborn women, prostitutes, slaves and freedwomen.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course students should:
- Be familiar with a range of different kinds of evidence for women in the classical world and how they can be used.
- Be able to describe and assess the life experiences of various types of women
- Be able to analyse and discuss key visual images of women in Greek Etruscan and Roman art
- Have an outline knowledge of the legal constraints on women, attitudes of Classical societies towards women, and women's roles in these societies.
