SummaryThis course will be designed to bring students into contact with leading edge research conducted by research teams in Edinburgh, with particular reference to issues of gender, age, race and class. It will aim to equip students with a broad, research based, critical understanding of key aspects of the locally structured nature of health, relationships between social capital and health, and relationships between the economic and material environment, public services and positive community well-being.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students should be able:
1. To contextualise current debates about the social causes of health and illness in Scotland and the UK more generally, with reference to recent research
2. To understand the social-historical development of the medical system in the United Kingdom, including the changing role of physicians and other health care providers.
3. To appreciate the historical role of women in the medical system as patients, practitioners, and health care providers.
4. To understand current ethical issues and debates about new medical technologies and their impact on doctor-patient relationships and on access to health care.
5. To evaluate current issues in the organization of medical care in the UK as well as alternatives for change.
