SummaryCourse content: The course is aimed at providing training in the pharmacology of inflammation and associated inflammatory diseases, providing an integrated view of inflammatory responses in terms of cell biology, pharmacology, physiology and pathology, with input from both basic and clinical scientists. Examination of the mechanisms underlying control of inflammation at a molecular and cellular level provide a background for understanding the pathophysiological consequences of dysregulated inflammation in the context of development and treatment of disease in different organs, including the lung, kidney and liver. The course provides knowledge and understanding of pharmacological mechanisms of current and potential new therapies for the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, asthma & COPD. The course will be taught using a combination of traditional lectures linked to group work where students work on designated topics culminating in class presentations later in the day. In the latter part of the course this will evolve into library-based projects where each group will devise a ?bench to bedside? programme for the development of a new treatment for a designated drug category. Each group will formally present their findings to the class in the final week of the Course.
