SummaryCourse content: Cardiovascular Pharmacology B will be organised and examined as a pair with Cardiovascular Pharmacology A. The course will take an integrated approach to the cardiovascular system, building on the information taught in Cardiovascular Pharmacology A. Topics to be covered include integrated control of blood pressure, the role of the renin-angiotensin system, the impact of sex steroid hormones and cardiac function. The course will also cover a number of cardiovascular disease states, including hypertension, myocardial function and heart failure; existing drug treatments for these conditions and novel therapeutic targets; and pharmacogenomic approaches to identification of new targets. The course will be taught using traditional lectures, linked tutorials based on paper analysis, workshops (e.g. molecular biology approaches), computer assisted learning (e.g. rat blood pressure) and demonstrations (e.g. methods of assessing cardiovascular function in man). Students will also be asked to make presentations based on revision of basic cardiovascular physiology and on 'hot topics in Cardiovascular Pharmacology'.
