Learning Outcomes
The course is made up of a series of lectures to allow the student to gain an understanding of the physiological processes of pregnancy and birth, with insight into the clinical issues and experimental models. By the end of the course you will be able to:
¿ Discuss the physiological processes of implantation, establishment and maintenance of pregnancy, and the control of labour;
¿ Explain the control of fetal development and growth, programming of the fetus within the uterus to influence wellbeing in later life, and the adaptations the fetus undergoes from the intra- to the extra-uterine environment;
¿ Describe the main clinical problems that can arise during pregnancy and labour, and to discuss the underlying pathophysiology, and
¿ Critically analyse some of the main animal and in vitro models used in pregnancy and parturition research
