SummaryThe course has two primary aims. First, to introduce students to recent critical work on the multi-layered dimension of the 'politics of identity' in South Asia, and to develop a comparative perspective within and across different States. Second, to highlight the specific contribution anthropology can make to understanding the topic, through a constant interdisciplinary dialogue with political theory, history and cultural studies. The course also aims at making students familiar with recent ethnographic work that analyses the real or imagined crisis of the nation-state in South Asia.

One caveat. A significant part of the course will focus on India and its regional variations. However, comparative perspectives on key issues such as nationalism, violence, education and middle-class will be developed with respect to Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
