SummaryThis course encourages students to take enjoyment in sociological ideas and apply them in everyday life. The course aims to induct first year students into the Sociology subject area and help students to develop the sociological study skills required at university level.

Students MUST be in year 1 of a Sociology degree programme (single or combined honours) or Sustainable Development with Sociology as their main subject. Students taking degree programmes in other subjects may not take this course

Additional Information (Assessment) Semester 1: Student blogs recording their reflections on what they learned from each session. These will be reviewed, assessed and discussed with students at the end of the semester.

Semester 2: A sociological diary, kept online. Students will be required to present and discuss entries from their diaries in a number of sessions throughout the semester, and then their final diaries will also be reviewed, assessed and discussed with students at the end of the semester.

Learning Outcomes
Students will gain competence and confidence in the key study skills required for sociology students at university including literature searching, essay writing, numerical literacy, critical sociological thinking and evaluating online sources from a sociological perspective. Students will also learn how sociological ideas can be applied in a range of everyday contexts including news consumption, media consumption and life experience.
