| Summary | The course aims to develop the student's skills in using scientific material to develop a testable hypothesis and construct a research plan to test the hypothesis. Students will be expected to make a convincing argument by summarising existing data, showing how the hypothesis is based on these results and demonstrating that the hypothesis can be tested using a feasible research plan. The research proposal may relate to the proposed laboratory work for the dissertation but will be independent of it. |

Learning Outcomes
At the completion of this course, the candidate should have specialised knowledge and experience in the chosen area of animal biosciences, should have formulated a hypothesis based on this knowledge and be able to present this material in the form or a research grant proposal such as might be submitted to a major funding organisation or industrial partner.
The candidate should:
o be familiar with an advanced area of animal biosciences;
o be able to make a logical, rational and well-argued hypothesis;
o have developed a feasible research programme to test this hypothesis;
o have justified the research programme;
o have taken into account the ethical issues and paid attention to the principles of reduction, replacement, and refinement in animal research.
