| Course description | The course is designed for graduates with no prior knowledge of modern standard Chinese (Mandarin).  Students acquire knowledge and understanding of basic spoken and written modern standard Chinese. |

| Students will encounter 8-900 vocabulary items and 500 Chinese characters.  They will be able to read simple texts and write basic sentences. |
