Course description | The course aims at postgraduate students who want to deepen their abilities to read and understand the Hebrew Bible in its original language. It offers an introduction into the methods of historical-critical scholarship for those students, whose emphasis is on Biblical Studies or those who want to pursue a postgraduate degree in Hebrew Bible. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of this course, the student will have:
- an understanding of the tools of historical-critical reading of the Hebrew Bible;
- an understanding of the textual history of the Old Testament;
- a familiarity with the resource tools in Hebrew Bible Studies and their appropriate use;
and will be able to:
- apply the methods of historical-critical reading to the texts;
- analyse independently the texts; and
- research different question of Hebrew Bible Studies on the basis of a methodically reflected historical-critical reading. |
Assessment Information
Assessment consists of a final 4000 word research essay (100%). In this essay, the student will analyse a text from the Hebrew Bible using the skills and abilities acquired in class. A minimum of 40% has to be obtained. Furthermore, a minimum of three formative essays (500 words each) have to be submitted by arrangement with the course manager. These will be timed to follow through the progress of methods and will prepare for the final research essay. |
