Course descriptionUsing the much debated concepts of auteur and authorship in cinema as its springboard, Cinema Auteurs will focus on the work of up to four contemporary directors who have developed film styles that are distinct from conventional mainstream. The course will not be limited to European film, allowing for the comparative analysis of the work of European and non-European filmmakers, looking at transtextual connections and comparing frameworks of references in international cinema. Key topics to be discussed in the course of the programme include: the issue of the usefulness or obsolescence of the concept of authorship in cinema considered in the context of changing cultural, socio-historical and filmmaking practices; postmodernity, reflexivity and the potential for radical practices in cinema; the conceptualisation of space and time in film; memory, history and film; cinematic developments in the context of other media evolution.
