Course description | This course examines key issues in the design and methods of qualitative research projects undertaken in counselling and psychotherapy and supports students to develop specialist expertise in particular qualitative approaches. The topics covered will vary from year to year to accommodate the particular interests of students but will usually include at least some of the following: conceptualising qualitative research; conducting and analysing research interviews; autoethnography; creative methodologies; developing in-depth case studies; conducting and analysing participatory and observational methods; research ethics in counselling and psychotherapy. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course students should be able to
identify and conceptualise the processes involved in designing and undertaking qualitative research in counselling and psychotherapy
critically assess the relevance of different methods of qualitative data generation and data analysis to specific research topics in counselling and psychotherapy
synthesise discussions about qualitative research methods relevant to specific research topics in counselling and psychotherapy
develop specialist expertise in at least one approach to qualitative research in counselling and psychotherapy
demonstrate an advanced understanding of ethical issues in qualitative research in counselling and psychotherapy
